Hindi Mein Labo

….says Pattu when I slip in some English words into our conversations in ‘Hindi’. Here’s a glimpse of Pattu brand of Hindi
As though homework is not painful enough, Pattu insists that we have our homework interactions only in Hindi! So, here we go – me in my broken Hindi and Pattu in her brand of flawless, pure, fluent Hindi:

Amma: Pehle pencil theek se pakdo
Pattu: Barke pencil pakdo karo ke
Amma: Box ke andar likho
Pattu: Karke deko arke box lene ki
Amma: Forgetting Hindi in frustration… You have to write in this box Pattu, not there
Pattu: Darka tum ne friend ke scold karo ke ni barke ni ‘pechi kaa’ karo ke ni. Karo ke tum?
(‘Pechi Ka’ is ‘will not talk to you’ in Tamil)
Amma: Theek hai, sorry, tum abhi homework khatam karo
Pattu: Paar ke deko ni tum box kene five kare
Amma: Pattuuu… yahaan, small letters ..
Pattu: Hindi mein labo! ‘Small’ Hindi ki? Hindi mein labo!
Amma: ***Giving up. In splits!

Apparam yeppadiyo labo labonnu homework oru vazhiya mudichom!
(Finally we finshed homework ‘labo-ing’ in Hindi)

  2. ROFL! I second Art, Na would totally understand this brand of hindi. She talks the same way too πŸ™‚ Maybe we should let Anush,Pattu and Na discuss the world's affairs in hindi and just watch from the sidelines. We might learn a thing or two or die of laughter trying to! πŸ™‚

  3. I just swallowed my tea through my nose.
    Ha ha ha ha.
I was thinking labo labo kathindu HW-a? and you said it.
Hilarious. Cute. Patient, you I mean. If they have to finish their milk and are doing monkey business, I don't even smile, leave alone talking in a different language….).

  4. PV – when I have the recorder handy, the conversation doesn't prolong…and most often, it occurs as a post event thought

    Jayashree- πŸ™‚

Art, Shankari – Am sure they'll understand each other better πŸ˜€

A – Was a bit tied up… We all had a good laugh that day πŸ˜€

Asha – This is just a small snippet that I've tried to recreate. The entire conversation lasted 30 mins!

Shruti – You said it – it is a new dialect indeed πŸ˜€

    Hema – Vera vazhiye illa…had to hold…
Hoppin off to yours to check the tag πŸ™‚

Anonymous – So much 'labo' happened, it seemed the best way to end the post πŸ˜€

utbt – Am not really gifted with patience, but Pattu leaves me with no choice sometimes. If I get annoyed and yell, she'll spend the next 20 mins crying!

  5. It is so cute to see kids speak in a language that they don't know and want to speak it so badly.
My kids love to speak Tamil and it is very cute to see them try it..
esp. they try to add the -la and -a endings as much – adhula, car-la and it makes us smile and don't have the heart to correct it πŸ™‚

  6. Pattu's Hindi is so hilarous :). Dhruv went through that phase when we visited Bombay…we all had such a good laugh.

  7. ROFL πŸ™‚ ROFL πŸ™‚ ROFL :).. does that say enuf πŸ™‚ I still have tears in my eyes πŸ™‚ fundoo stuff πŸ™‚

  10. Deepa – True… it does sound very cute πŸ™‚ And you are right – I just don't feel like correcting the 'labo' πŸ˜€

Hema – Really? Wondering how Dhruv's Hindi would have been – especially with that aussie accent πŸ˜‰

Ambulisamma – Oh, you don't have to understand hindi to understand pattu's hindi πŸ˜€

    Swaram – πŸ˜€

Preeti – Oh she will..and do post it when it happens πŸ™‚

    Pooh – πŸ™‚

Lostworld – πŸ˜€ I'll have to tell Pattu to do that

    Vidya – πŸ˜€ ..I'll add a warning next time…

TPL – Where have you been? She is labo-ing something as I'm typing this, in fact… πŸ˜€

  11. πŸ˜€ Came over from Chotus…
I was laughing to myself all through the conversation.. but just about managed to not burst out at your last line in Tamil πŸ™‚
